Athletics Club Springs into Action

Now that the summer term is upon us, Cullybackey College’s Athletic Club is up and running. Pupils from all year groups came out in force on the first sunny Tuesday of Spring, in preparations for the college’s Sports Day in June.

Ulster Sportshall Finals

The Ulster Sportshall Finals were held in Meadowbank Arena, Magherafelt and teams from several Counties took part.

The Co. Antrim team consisted of pupils across the county, who had been selected at the Heats held in St. Patrick’s College, Ballymena.  In the Under 13 team, Cullybackey College pupils Katy Duff, Tamzin Murray, Jodie Wylie, Adam Steele and Gareth Lamont were chosen to represent their County at the Finals.  The winning team in each age group would travel to England for the UK Finals later in the year.

Gareth Lamont, Year 9 at Cullybackey, came away with a bronze medal after finishing 3rd in the 2-Lap Relay, however, a strong Co. Donegal team were clear winners after an enjoyable morning of Indoor Athletics. Well done to all the pupils who took part.

Athletics Tournament Success, June 2014

Congratulations to our Year 8 athletes who participated today at Dunclug's Athletics Tournament. Jade Millar – 1st in 100m/Shot Put, Lucia Bernatova – 3rd in 600m/2nd in High Jump. Jodie Wylie – 1st in High Jump. Well done also to the Relay Team of Jade Millar, Lucia Bernatova, Jodie Wylie and Zoe Mulligan who ran out winners today!

Shot Put success for Laura Gordon, NEBSSA 2014

Click to enlargeLaura Gordon was placed 3rd at the NEBSSA Athletics Finals on Wednesday 14th May. Laura had qualified for this event at the regional heat on Friday 2nd of May, competing in the Shot Put event.

At the finals, Laura faced very tough opposition from 8 other competitors, with some of the girls producing distances of over 9m. Ballyclare High finished first and second to allow Laura to slot into 3rd with a distance of 7.17m. Well done Laura!

Sportshall athletics for PE pupils

Boys and girls from Years 8-11 recently participated in the Annual Sports Hall athletics competitions at St Patrick's College.

On Friday 24th January the Year 10s and 11s competed against four schools from the area, and as usual did themselves proud. We now await the final results to see who has qualified for the next stage. The PE department would like to thanks St Patrick's College for organising another very successful and enjoyable event.

Cullybackey pupils excel at Sportshall Athletics event

Click to enlargeOn Friday 8th February Year 10 and 11 Cullybackey HS athletes travelled to St Patrick's to compete in the annual Sportshall Athletics heats. The competition involved Dunclug College, Parkhall School, Ballyclare HS, St Killian's and St Patrick's HS. Competitors entered short distance running events as well the Vertical Jump, Standing Long Jump, Standing Triple Jump and the Shot Putt. Individuals were put into heats for the running events and all competed and represented the school superbly. The qualifiers will be announced this week to see who progresses to the next stage of the competition. Well done to all involved.

A large number of competitors enjoyed a wide range of track and field events at our annual Key Stage 3 Sports Day on Monday 18th June.

NEBSSA Athletics 2012

Well done to Ryan Nesbitt, Jason Johnston, Matthew Kirk, David Woods, Paula Platore, Alana Duff and Rebecca Hill who competed in the NEBSSA Athletics Finals at the Antrim Forum on Wednesday 16th May.

Indoor Athletics 2012

A group of pupils participated in an indoor athletics tournament on 10th January in order to compete for a place in their relevant Co Antrim squads. They completed the shot put, high jump, long jump, vertical jump, triple jump and various indoor track events. Well done to Lauren McGall, Hannah McCleister and Jason Selfridge who have been selected for the U13 Co Antrim Indoor Athletics Squad. David Woods and Alana Duff have been selected for the U15 Squad, with Matthew Kirk a reserve.

They will now compete in the Ulster Indoor Athletics Tournament at the Meadowbank Sports Arena (Magherafelt) on the 8th of March.

Ulster Schools' Athletics 2012

Promising 200m runner James Neilly of 10A2 represented the school at the Ulster Schools' (District C) Athletics Championships at Antrim Forum on Wed 11 May. In spite of being up against some more experienced runners, James came away with a very creditable 2nd place and a silver medal in a time of 25.7 seconds.
